Dental Implant Procedure Step by Step

Understanding the dental implant procedure before your treatment helps reduce anxiety and lets you prepare properly. Here is exactly what to expect, from your very first consultation to the final crown placement.

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Assessment

Your dentist will perform a thorough oral examination, including a 3D CBCT scan to assess bone density, quantity, and the position of nerves and sinuses. Medical history is reviewed for conditions like diabetes, blood thinners, or osteoporosis.

Step 2: Treatment Planning

A customised treatment plan is created, specifying the implant brand, size, and placement angle. If bone grafting is needed, it is planned at this stage.

Step 3: Bone Grafting (If Required)

If your jawbone is too thin or soft, a bone graft is placed first and allowed to heal for 3–6 months before implant placement.

Step 4: Implant Placement Surgery

Under local anaesthesia (or sedation if preferred), a small incision is made in the gum, and the titanium post is screwed into the jawbone. The gum is sutured, and a healing cap may be placed.

Step 5: Osseointegration (Healing Period)

Over the next 3–6 months, the implant fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration. This is the most critical phase for long-term stability.

Step 6: Abutment Placement

Once healed, a connector piece (abutment) is attached to the implant. This serves as the base for the crown. A temporary crown may be placed during this phase.

Step 7: Crown Placement

A custom-made permanent crown (usually zirconia) is attached to the abutment. Your dentist will check the bite and make any necessary adjustments.
