Root Canal Treatment

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

One of the most common questions patients ask before their appointment is: how long does a root canal take? The answer depends on the tooth type, complexity of the canals, and whether single or multi-sitting treatment is chosen.

RCT Duration by Tooth and Method

TreatmentApproximate Duration
Single-canal tooth (front tooth), single sitting45–60 minutes
Multi-canal tooth (molar), single sitting75–90 minutes
Multi-sitting RCT (Visit 1)45–60 minutes
Multi-sitting RCT (Visit 2–3)30–45 minutes each

What Happens During Each Visit?

Visit 1: Diagnosis, anaesthesia, access opening, pulp removal, canal shaping and initial irrigation. A temporary filling is placed.

Visit 2 (if multi-sitting): Further cleaning, irrigation with medicated solutions, and in some cases, obturation (canal sealing).

Final visit: Obturation, post and core if needed, and crown preparation.

Factors That Can Extend Treatment Time

  • Calcified or curved canals
  • Large periapical abscess requiring drainage
  • Re-treatment of a previously root-canalled tooth
  • Complex molar anatomy (4+ canals)
