Root Canal Treatment

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

Ask most people their biggest dental fear and many will say: root canal treatment. Yet this reputation is largely undeserved. Modern RCT is virtually painless thanks to advanced anaesthesia techniques and rotary instrumentation.

Does It Hurt During the Procedure?

No. The tooth and surrounding tissue are numbed with local anaesthesia before any work begins. You may feel pressure or vibration from instruments, but not sharp pain. If you feel anything uncomfortable, simply signal to your dentist to add more anaesthesia.

What About After the Procedure?

Some mild soreness or sensitivity for 2–3 days after RCT is normal. It is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or paracetamol. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.

Is the Pain Rated High by Patients?

Studies show that patients consistently rate post-RCT pain lower than they anticipated. The pain from the original infection (before RCT) is typically far more severe than any post-procedure discomfort.

Tips for a Comfortable RCT Experience

  • Inform your dentist of any anxiety so they can discuss sedation options
  • Take prescribed or recommended analgesics after the procedure
  • Avoid chewing on the treated side until the crown is placed
  • Rest and eat soft foods for 24 hours post-treatment
