Root Canal Treatment

How to Care for Teeth After RCT

Root canal treatment saves your tooth – but aftercare determines whether it stays saved. Following the right post-RCT care routine is essential for healing, preventing re-infection, and ensuring the tooth lasts decades.

Immediately After RCT (First 24–48 Hours)

  • Avoid eating until the numbness wears off completely (risk of biting cheek/tongue)
  • Eat soft foods: yoghurt, soup, mashed potatoes, smoothies
  • Avoid chewing on the treated side
  • Take prescribed antibiotics (if given) and pain relievers as directed
  • Avoid very hot or cold food and beverages

First Week After RCT

  • Brush gently around the treated tooth
  • Rinse with warm salt water 2–3 times daily to reduce inflammation
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods
  • Do not prod the temporary filling with your tongue

Long-Term Care After RCT

  • Get your crown placed as soon as recommended – an unprotected RCT tooth is fragile and can fracture
  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily around the crown
  • Attend 6-monthly dental check-ups
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth (bruxism)
