Dental Crowns

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is one of the most prescribed restorations in dentistry – but not every damaged tooth needs one. Understanding when a crown is genuinely necessary helps you make informed decisions about your dental care.

1. After Root Canal Treatment

This is the most common reason for a crown. Root-canal-treated teeth become brittle and prone to fracture without crown protection – especially for back teeth that absorb heavy chewing forces.

2. Severely Decayed Tooth

When more than 50–60% of a tooth’s structure is lost to decay and a filling alone won’t provide sufficient strength or coverage, a crown is needed to encase and protect the remaining tooth.

3. Cracked or Fractured Tooth

A crown holds a cracked tooth together, preventing the crack from spreading further. Without one, biting pressure can cause the tooth to split completely, requiring extraction.

4. Dental Implant Restoration

Every dental implant requires a crown to be placed on top of the abutment to function as a visible, functional tooth.

5. Worn Down Teeth (Bruxism)

Chronic teeth grinding wears enamel down significantly. Crowns restore the original tooth height and protect the remaining structure.

6. Cosmetic Correction

Severely discoloured, misshapen, or too-small teeth that cannot be improved with veneers or bonding alone may benefit from a full crown.

7. To Hold a Dental Bridge

The two teeth on either side of a gap (abutment teeth) are crowned to anchor a bridge replacing the missing tooth in between.
